Painful Bump on the Inside of the Big Toe - Bunion Deformity

A bunion is often seen as a bump on the side of the big toe that can be very painful. This bump is caused by a shift in the alignment of the bone at the base of the big toe.

  • Changes in activities – Avoid participating in activities that cause pain, including standing for long periods of time.
  • Medications – Certain drugs such as ibuprofen may be able to help reduce inflammation.
  • Icing – Applying an ice-pack to the bunion throughout the day can help to reduce inflammation.
  • Injections – Injections of corticosteroids can sometimes be used to treat bunions.
  • Orthotics – Custom orthotic shoe inserts may also help to treat bunions.

Surgical Treatment Options

  • Corrective surgery can be done in cases where normal, non-surgical treatment is ineffective.
